Stained Glass Windows

From the Chaplain’s Desk . . .

Our stained glass windows were installed in the Chapel on May 3, 2010, and dedicated on June 5. You can see the design for the windows by following this link: window design.
You can also read descriptions of the design elements.
The Catholic Student Center community is deeply grateful to Sue Obata, of Obata Studios, who produced the design for our Chapel windows and Sattler Studios, which fabricated and installed the windows.
The stained glass project will continue to include the windows in the daily Mass Chapel. The existing windows in the Small Chapel will be replaced during the summer months with transparent glass and new frames made to hold stained glass. A design for the Small Chapel windows will be ready shortly after the beginning of the Fall Semester.
A LETTER FROM SUE OBATA:
June 7, 2010
To Father Alan and the parishioners of the Catholic Center,
Thank you so much for your warm welcome last Saturday. I was so pleased to be there for the Blessing of the windows and to hear so many kind words. A few days ago, I read an article in the business section of the newspaper on art. It was unusual to see these two topics together! The story was about businesses that have commissioned art for their buildings - interior and exterior, and found that people have noticed and responded. This has brought attention to their buildings and themselves and therefore has been a great success. Business has discovered what the church has been doing for hundreds of years! - supporting artists and allowing them to be creative. As you suggested last Saturday, Father Alan, the art helps give the church the feeling that it is, indeed, made of "living stones" - worth of its purpose and a celebration of creation and the Creator. But in this age of mass production and "catalogue art" , it is not usual to commission art. Thankfully there are still those who seek quality and appreciate creativity.
Thank you Father Alan, the donors and the parishioners of the Catholic Center for the opportunity to make these windows - we are honoured. It has been a pleasure
to make them and to see them in place, with you in front of them.
All the best,
Sue Obata
