The Catholic Church generally offers to pathways to becoming Catholic:
1) The Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA) is for those seeking baptism and who have never been baptized in another Christian church. This program that prepares an unbaptized person to enter the Catholic Church. The first stage is that of Inquirer. This is simply someone who would like to know more about the Catholic Church.
When the Inquirer is ready to move forward they will become either a Catechumen (if he or she has not received the Sacrament of Baptism) or a Candidate (if the person has already been baptized).
2) The Sacrament of Confirmation is for those who have already received baptism whether in the Catholic Church or otherwise, so long as it was a valid baptism.
OCIA begins in thas three stages. The first stage is called the Inquiry Sessions. Next, there are Catechesis Classes. Sacramental Preparation is the final stage of OCIA.
